Early
Signs of Spring
The ground is most with rain, not
blanketed with snow. Small birds and squirrels peck and pounce over every stray
seed they find. The silent night is awakened by chirps and rustles of nocturnal
creatures. And the smells shift from smoky wood fires to living, breathing
trees, beginning to burst their buds. The same light beams in through the
windows, but somehow it’s warmer, closer. Bare feet run and dash across the
floor without a care in the world, because morning chill is not nearly so
fierce. Every branch quietly trembles with anticipation, while a few small
animals hurry to get a head start, before their migrating competitors return.
But at night the chill creeps back in, and we bundle up to keep out the cold,
but no snow falls, and even the wind can’t pierce our coats.
