“What Happens to a Dream Deferred”

By Adam Gentry

I would say a dream deferred is a good test, of whether or not it’s true. Anyone can pick up a dream and dally with it, like a summer fling, but will you go back to it?

There have been times in the past where I did not write for months, or years. I was busy with work, or in a bad place, and I paid for it. Returning, I found familiar paths reclaimed by weeds, the doors and windows refused to open, choked with vines. It would have been easy to let it tangle and rot, but instead I reach for clippers, or a shovel, and clear and clean. Sometimes it’s just a matter of pulling a few weeds, other times I have to tear up rotten floorboards and replace the foundation, but it’s worth it.

If it was worth it before, why not again? Rebuild it, and then, keep going, if I can, until the job is done. Once it’s finished I’ll never have to start again, but I don’t kid myself,  that’s a long ways away.
